Trip to Halifax – Photos

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

During my 2 months in Saint John, I managed to make it out to Halifax. Here are some pictures from my trip… I only spent a day and a half in Halifax, so I didn’t get to do too much – I definitely look forward to going back (to Halifax) for a longer visit at some point in my life – what a great city! And Peggy’s Cove – Amazing.

Calgary Sunset

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

On the way home from work, we had one of those amazing Calgary sunsets. The sky was orange, pink, dark and lit, all at the same time. As soon as I got home, I grabbed my gear and ran to the park to try and catch the sunset before it was too late.

50mm f/1.8 Sample Shots

Friday, January 9th, 2009

So a couple of days ago, I decided to go out and buy something to suppress my want for the $$ equipment on my wish list.

The cheapest thing I could find that would entertain me just long enough was the Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens. When I say cheap, I mean disposable cheap. However, this lens packs a lot of punch for what you pay!

With such a large aperture and, subsequently, a shallow depth of field it makes for some very interesting shots. The large aperture also allows you to take more hand-held photos in lower light situations. Also, a 50mm on my 1.6 crop body camera would equate to 80mm – a great focal length for portrait photography! (more…)

Reflecting Cheaper Light [Updated]

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

After doing some research today regarding different brands of collapsible light reflectors, I learned the following:

I just placed an order on eBay for a 43″/5 in 1 Collapsible Light Reflecting Disc for a whopping $24, shipping included! The same type of contraption form my local camera store was selling for $169!

I’ll update this post once I receive the reflector and test it out!

[Update 2009/01/26] I received the reflector about a week or so ago, however I haven’t really had a chance to test it out. Check back for some pictures and overall thoughts regarding quality etc…

The Great Glass Debate – Part 1

Monday, December 29th, 2008

As part of my ambition towards becoming a better photographer, upgrading my equipment became imminent. After getting (placing on my Christmas list) “The Digital Photography Book“, by Scott Kelby, and talking to a few people, I quickly realized that upgrading my “Glass” (Lenses) and investing in, and using,  a half decent tripod will help get me to the next level.
